Desigual Autumn/Winter 2017 Collection at NYFW

Desigual brings to light the diverse spirit of women “going rogue” to celebrate their identities, an attitude marking resilience from era to era, from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Pulling from the dance culture of England in the ’60s and the voguing rage of the US in the ’80s, mixing in the Spanish New Wave and Californian Rock scene, we view a diverse mix at Desigual’s Fall/Winter 2017 runway show.

There’s an edgy, tomboy vibe with some punk inspiration noted in rips and tears, industrial jewelry, and plaids and leathers in hues of red and black. Also noted are denim sets from head to toe with colorful prints on jackets, and fishnet tights paired with short dresses and skirts. Transitioning into more feminine looks, there are long dresses with psychedelic patterns, whimsical flower designs and geometrical patterns in hues of yellow, green, red, blue and black. Bowling shirts come into play as well, in addition to sports vests, Brogue shoes and high-waist Oxford trousers. A few lace pieces and animal prints made this collection very eclectic, adding a contrasting soft and delicate mood.

The entire collection tells the story of women with eccentric styles and tastes with a hint of rebellion who love rock ‘n’ roll and showing a bit of edge while keeping an element of class with a definite case of “street smarts.” Strutting with confidence, the Desigual woman knows who she is, and isn’t afraid to show it with some major personality.

The blizzard doesn’t stop OHLIN/D from executing a chic presentation during NYFW at Roll & Hill. This eco-friendly brand began in September 2013, and has always sourced quality materials from vendors that steer clear from animal cruelty. It’s a noble concept that aligns seamlessly with the label’s aesthetic. The OHLIN/D woman is effortless, cool, fresh and fun. This afternoon’s presentation is even raising funds for a charity called DreamYard, who collaborates with Bronx youth to build pathways to opportunity through the arts. A truly genuine cause.

Beautiful floral arrangements and contemporary lighting fixtures surrounded the models, making it feel almost like Spring, despite the snow coming down outside. The ladies wore feminine garments, from a lilac silk bow blouse, to a floating gingham knit top. Fabrics of lace embroidery, denim, and houndstooth looked extra dreamy. Looks are held together with large safety pins, adding a whimsical flair. Socks and sandals gave the show a trendy touch, while natural hair and makeup kept attention on the clothing. Ohlin/D succeeded in putting together a stunningly whimsical yet modern presentation.

Nicholas K delivered a stunning collection of tone-on-tone sets, metallic pattern mixes, and crushed velvet textures in the Fall 2017 collection. The show started out with flowing, asymmetrical shapes, followed by a parade of rust-colored statement coats and neutral toned tunics tied around the waist with a sash. Coats were worn over the shoulder, and pants were worn low on the hip and accented by zippers at the ankle.
The simplistic nature of the line gave plenty of room for statement accessories. Tribal nose rings, over-the-top hoop earrings, French berets, metallic booties, and leather headbands adorned the models’ bodies and complimented their natural makeup. The styling added an element of edge as well. With their hair worn straight and over one shoulder, we were able to see the variation of necklines. From V-neck, to cowl neck, to scoop, to cutout, we were filled with anticipation to see the uniqueness of each piece as the models sauntered down the runway in them.
This exquisite collection captured a stunning modern essence and left us eager for the fall fashion season to roll around.

Imagine a night out with your girlfriends. Now imagine the most beautiful shades of blush, burgundy, ivory, black, and indigo on billowing maxis paired with structured velvet blazers completed with a bohemian printed scarf. This vision was portrayed luxuriously in the Erin Fetherston ‘In Pursuit of Rhapsody’ collection for Fall 2017. Inspired greatly by her travels, Fetherston brought elements from all over the globe into her romantic, free-spirited pieces. Babouches adorned the models’ feet, as worn in Marakesh, Morocco.  Shimmering black and gold gowns flowed beautifully next to tiered fringe floor-length dresses inspired by Seville’s flamenco dancers. As the gowns swept the runway, the audience was tantalized by the movement of the fringe tassels. Velvet blazers and dramatic maxi dresses were effortlessly interwoven for the ideal dressed-up bohemian look. This pairing evidently defined her line as a ‘refined take on bohemian dressing.’

The models each had a unique, exotic look. Their makeup was done subtly, and long tousled waves bounced on shoulders as the models flounced down the runway. Minimal accessories decorated their bodies, making the ethereal clothing the focal point of each look. This collection really speaks to the romantic, free-spirited soul inside us all, just waiting to make its way out.

Tadashi Soshi at the Skylight Clarkson for the Autumn/Winter 2017 collection wowed with evening gowns and formal wear, mostly floor-length gowns. Also noted was a dressy pantsuit and unique architectural structures in some skirts. The colors ranged from solid jewel tones of royal blue, forest green and crimson, to metallics of gold, silver, and also metallic blues and reds. There were also a few black pieces with gold embroidery. In fact, a few colored gowns had the gold embroidery as well. Lace detailing and velvet were also popular in the collection. The whole collection fused was regal beauty with luxurious sophistication and elegance.

MITH: How did you get started in design? What’s your story?

Oday Shakar: Okay, well that’s a long one, but I started when I was 13, and I was living in Labanon, and I studied under another designer. I knew I wanted to be a designer from a very young age, so I began my journey very young.

MITH: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this season’s line?

Oday Shakar: Yeah, so the inspiration kind of came from an emotion of just overcoming darkness in one’s life, and I’ve dealt with that. I’ve seen a lot of women deal with that, and I feel there’s something empowering and beautiful that you can grab from it, so I grabbed from that.

MITH: Wonderful! So, how do the colors, fabrics, or silhouettes represent this female empowerment?

Oday Shakar: Well, you know, it starts off with very dark, mysterious feeling, and it kind of graduates and trancends into these hues of colors that bring light and beauty. You’ll see a very strong, empowered feeling throughout the entire collection.

MITH: I love that! Do you have a favorite look of the day?

Oday Shakar: The finale!

Oday Shakar dazzled us with an evening wear collection full of drapery and billowing fabrics, with many whimsical silhuettes showcasing long dresses with floral patterns interwoven into the fabrics, as well as pants with blouses, in colors of white, black, forest green, crimson and burgundy.

Multi-colored furs, shimmery evening gowns, and feather details dominated the runway at the Pamella Roland’s Fall 2017 show. Rich shades of ‘tobacco, amethyst, garnet, moss, onyx, and aubergine,’ in custom printed fabrics took the audience’s breath away with their timeless, classic look. Mixing of leather cut-out pants with bedazzled waistlines and hints of earth toned feathers gives us the perfect combination of femininity and edge.

Roland delivered across the board on work appropriate velvet separates, and sultry gowns for a big night out. These staple pieces can easily transition through the seasons. On the more upscale end of her designs were whimsical, billowing dresses made of devore, stretch crepe, and mesh organza. A white feather embellished gown stood out with its fairytale-esque nature. Complimenting the collection was the use of stunning hair and makeup.

The models wore their hair in waves that draped down their back. Makeup dramatically dressed up their eyes, and a pop of red lipstick brought the rich colors of the collection together. Overall, this show stunned with a wide range of textures, architectural pieces that any girl would enjoy wearing.

Leanne Marshall never ceases to impress. Her Autumn/Winter 2017 collection is absolutely divine. Dresses, jackets, gowns and pants in hues of black, taupe, mauve gray, copper, and chocolate grace the runway. The bold, red, flowing, silky gown stands out above all the other looks. Backstage, the lucky blonde model that gets to wear it, twirls about for the photographers. The finale dress is a black ball gown, with intricate details of beads and feathers.

More shining fabrics of beige have jaws dropping everywhere. Some looks even have alternating black and beige details, impeccably constructed. Other contrasting looks included silk blouses with lace skirts. One look that had more of an edgy vibe than the rest was a black and white striped gown with a red belt. The model’s aesthetic matched its vibe seamlessly and totally rocked the runway.

The dramatic eyeliner and red lip go perfectly with the garments. Even the hair is styled with incredible detail, pulled back in a ponytail with various pieces held together with rubber bands, creating a stunning textured look. Leanne certainly out-did herself, yet again. I’m not surprised in the least.

The Naem Khan Fall 2017 line sparkles and shines at Skylight Clarkson. The collection ravishes the audience with luxurious fabrics and dramatic silhouettes. Shades of crimson, olive, mustard, orchid, and periwinkle stand out against the red carpet runway. Embellished kimonos paired with lace bras and velvet flares add a touch of bohemian to the collection.

Over-the-knee boots are a trend spotted throughout the show, along with layered beaded necklaces. Some boots are dripping in sequins, and others are decked out with a floral pattern to match the coats. Adding to the floral detailing are print-mixed pieces. Cheetah print paired with textured floral fabrics flow effortlessly together to create an immaculate night-out look. Sophisticated pieces include a tiered gown, sequin pantsuit and sequin dress, and a simple ball gown. A few pieces have a Great Gatsby feel with their jewel bodice detailing paired with fringe elements. Accessorized by ‘red bottoms’ and pom-pom statement earrings, each model has a unique presence. They wear their hair slicked back, or in an up-do. Light makeup dusts their faces, giving them a dewey glow. This was is show-stopper of a collection, and truly showcases Khans upscale style.
