Festival Fashion Tips for Surviving (& Enjoying!) Coachella

$

Retailers, bloggers, and celebs everywhere are holding nothing back as they show off their bohemian best for Coachella’s music-filled weekend in Indio desert. It seems that year after year, as the hype continues to grow, fans become more focused on who wore what, rather than who was on stage— with a few musical exceptions, of course.

While Vogue-inspired editorial highlights have been a complete desert dream, they haven’t featured the most practical ensembles for actual festival attendees. Unless you’re aiming for a major fashion-forward moment and doing Coachella extreme VIP style, it’s probably best to leave the Chanel bags and designer Muu Muus at home and opt for more practical attire throughout the dusty desert days. But don’t worry; you can still look good doing it!

erica aulds coachella 3 erica aulds coachella 2

Tip #1: Wear closed toed shoes.

Gladiator sandals scream boho-babe, but unless your Alessandra Ambrosio or Kendall Jenner, chances are you’ll be doing a lot of walking through very dusty terrain. To avoid the dirt and unnecessary pain, stick with a reliable espadrille like a pair of Soludos or Sole Society shoes. When in doubt, pack something comfortable that you won’t mind getting dirty.

Tip #2: Leave the expensive sunglasses at home.

The amount of broken and lost sunglasses around the polo grounds brings pain to wallets worldwide. If you’re worried about losing something, don’t bring it. Even the most responsible of partiers can be prone to the sunglass misfortune. You will definitely need a pair throughout the sunny desert days, but try these heart frames, these flower child frames, or classic aviators instead— all 2 for $15 so if you happen misplace them, they already will have done their job!

Tip #3: Bring a backpack.

Always carry a small backpack to the Festival grounds. There are a few essentials you’ll definitely need including sunscreen, ID, Cell Phone, Flower Crown, hat, and dry shampoo, and they’ll all fit perfectly into an easy to manage backpack. This suede fringe backpack and white crochet bag both scream Sahara Tent style.

Tip #4: Pack a jacket.

Despite the blazing temperatures during the day, the desert can get pretty cold at night! Wildfox sweatshirts make an ideal sundown staple while embroidered fringe kimonos are a great way to changes things up!

erica aulds coachella 4

Tip #5: Opt for a romper.

Let’s be honest, there’s a lot of work that goes into Coachella outfit prep. We’ve seen high-waisted shorts, crochet tops, flowy goddess maxi’s, and everything in between, but the easiest ensemble to date is a Festival Romper. They’re extremely practical for the festival attendee and still completely Coachella chic.

erica aulds coachella 1

Tip #6: When it comes to jewelry, more is more!

Even if you’re the jewelry minimalist of all minimalists, a weekend in the desert calls for accessory overload. Stackable bracelets are a must-have item. It can get really toasty with bangles up to your elbow, so a wrap bracelet from Chan Lu or a bracelet set can be a good way to go.  A pop of turquoise and a long necklace also adds that extra festival touch.

Tip #7: Have zero expectations and just have fun!

Coachella is one of those weekends that you go into with a game-plan then have to throw everything out the window. It’s important to plan out your daily itinerary and definitely set a group meeting place ahead of time because cell service is very spotty, but overall, let go of expectations, get rid of the pressure to “get the ‘gram,” take a ride on the Ferris Wheel, soak in the music, savor a watermelon popsicle, and enjoy the beautiful desert days!

Bells & Fringe for Festival Season

Lately, it’s all about easy breezy bell sleeves, paisley bell bottoms, and fringe action — especially for desert dreamers and festival babes.

Whether or not you plan on going to Coachella or another music festival, these styles will remain on the hit-list all season long. We’ve seen many trends on the festival grounds so far — among these include crop tops and high-waisted shorts, maxi dresses, rompers and playsuits, and so much more. While these are great for daytime wear, it’s important to keep in mind that it can get pretty chilly at night in the desert. This is when bell bottoms come in stylishly handy.

No festival outfit is complete without accessory-overload. Hats are a must-have because it can get blazing hot out there, and as for belts and jewelry… well, let’s just say that we can never get enough. Go ahead — feel free to pull out the fringe choker, anklet, and bag you’ve been dying to wear. After all, fringe and bells make the perfect ensemble for a cute festival look!

For all those attending Coachella weekend 2 here in Southern California — have a blast and stay safe! xx

Boho Model Lauren LeBouef’s Best Festival Style Ideas

Festival fashion has been around all Spring season long, whether you plan on attending a music festival or not. With that said, we got a chance to sit down and chat a bit about festival style with one of our own fashionistas, Lauren LeBouef, and here are some interesting things she’s shared with us! Hope you enjoy!

1. What is your favorite festival trend and why?

My favorite festival trend would be cute face paint and body gems!

2. Give us a tip on dressing comfortably (and fashionably!) at a music festival.

I am ALL about being comfortable when it comes to clothing! My favorite things to wear on days when I’m going for comfort but still want that music festival vibe are boho softs and stretchy pants! I’d probably wear the pants with a cute and comfy tank or a crop top with it. 🙂

3. What is your favorite YouTuber when it comes to festival style?

Alex Centomo!

4. What would your ideal festival #OOTD look like?

Since I’ll be headed to Stage Coach in Indio, California next week, my ideal outfits for the weekend will most likely consist of high waisted shorts — they’re so easy to pair with a cute crop top and cowboy boots!

5. What would you say is an absolute must-have music festival necessity?

Definitely a bag or backpack! This will be my first time at a three-day festival and I know I’m going to want to bring my camera, sunglasses, and a light jacket for nighttime. A bag will be perfect for holding all my essentials.

6. What are your favorite brands/where do you like to shop for festival pieces?

I’m IN LOVE with so many Show Me Your MuMu pieces! I’m actually modeling for them the week before I leave for Stage Coach, so I’m sure you’ll find me wearing one of their pieces at the festival!

7. Do you have a go-to hair style for the occasion?

I really like wearing my hair curled/wavy! if I’m getting annoyed with it being down in my face over the weekend I’ll pin back the front pieces for a “half up/half down” look or throw on a cute & country snap back with my hair in a pony tail. 🙂

8. If you had to describe your festival style in a few words, what would it be?

Girly, flirty, and country girl style!

9. What do you look for when you’re shopping for music festivals?

I look for pieces that I know I won’t be too hot in throughout the long day of being in the sun! Light materials with some fun prints would be ideal.

10. Where do you find your outfit inspo from?

I’d probably say I get a lot of inspo from Instagram accounts such as my favorite ones to model for: American Eagle and Show Me Your MuMu!

VIVI Academy Autumn/Winter 2016 Collection at NYFW

VIVI Academy Designer

Addicted to social media? #Yep! 24 year old Vivi Moya’s debut collection is a playful reflection of millennials’ obsession with smartphones and their endless craving for “likes.” The “VIVI Academy” girl is a down to earth tomboy who kicks it in sneaks by day, and struts in pumps by night. Washable, wearable fabrics in primary blues, reds and sandy browns mirror the Facebook and Instagram logos’ colors. Hashtags and hearts add sass alongside mesh, zippers, patches and drawstring details. It’s a flirty, fun combination that I’m sure will spark many selfies in anyone wearing it.

Looking closer, however, there are a few elements that add a fascinatingly creepy, dark touch. The models’ under-eyes are red and glittery, as if their gazes have been transfixed on a screen for far too long. And a video is projected on the wall of a model popping sugar pills and snorting glitter in a bathroom– a metaphor for our generation’s drug-like addiction to social media and constant communication, perhaps?

VIVI Academy NYFW 16I got the chance to speak with Vivi herself, who agrees our generation’s problem has gone a bit too far. But she believes we shouldn’t take it too seriously. I mean hey, if it can inspire such a cool clothing line, at least some good has come out of it! Am I right?

MITH: Can you explain the inspiration behind your collection?

VIVI: The “selfie generation” is what I call it. If I leave my phone at home and I’ve already gotten to my destination, I will go back for it because I feel naked and lost. That’s what everyone does nowadays. And if you don’t document something that that’s important, it’s like it never happened. It’s funny that we care so much about the likes and attention— that’s what drove the inspiration.

MITH: Definitely. So do you think that that’s good or bad?

VIVI: Well, it’s bad, but I can’t say that because I do it also. It’s not necessarily good or bad; it’s kind of sad, but at the same time we kind of have to embrace it. So that’s the frame of mind where the line came from; it’s not too serious. It has a playfulness and lightheartedness about it.

VIVI Academy NYFWMITH: I love it. Can you talk about the color palette and fabrics you used?

VIVI: The story behind the color palette is actually kind of funny. I was inspired by all of the primary colors that are used in social media. You know how Facebook has blue and Instagram has that sandy color in the icon? I took those colors and made them a little more neutral so they weren’t so vibrant.

Most of the fabrics are from New York while some were imported from China and Europe. They’re really high-quality— this coat is 100% cashmere. But most are machine washable and usable— I didn’t want to be too crazy. I personally hate linings and I feel like the “VIVI Academy” girl is very down to earth. If she buys something, she’s going to wear it over and over again, and she’s just going to wash it. She’s a tomboy and she’ll wear one of those fancy dresses with Converse. So that’s the vibe.

MITH: I love that. Can you tell me a little bit more about yourself and how you got into fashion?

VIVI Academy FashionVIVI: Long story short, I wasn’t born in Cuba but my whole family was. My grandma was a sewer who would sew all the time, and she taught me a couple things. To this day, she still critiques me on little details, like, “you didn’t do this right,” and I’m like, “crap,” I’ll never satisfy her, but it’s great. My family has always done something artistic. My mom was always a painter and my grandfather was a cobbler. I started drawing my own designs when I was two or three, and making my own little magazines. It sounds funny, but…

MITH: No, that’s how you know you’re meant to do it if you start at such a young age!

VIVI Academy ClothingVIVI: Right, I can’t see myself doing anything else. I mean, I only slept two hours last night, but I’m the happiest person!

MITH: You must be exhausted, I’m not going to keep you much longer! What’s your view on Snapchat?

VIVI: OMG, I’m obsessed with it! Honestly I wanted to bring Snapchat into this space by bringing in mirrors with drawings on them so people could take mirror pics with the collection in the background. I wasn’t allowed to do it though because it would’ve been a hazard.

MITH: That would’ve been fun, you’ll have to do it next time! The logistics are always the hardest part. It’s one thing to have an idea and it’s another thing to execute it, but I think you did a phenomenal job regardless.

VIVI: Thank you so much!

Runa Ray Clothing

The backstage door to Runa Ray’s show at Skylight at Clarkson Square was conveniently hidden under an overpass. After walking past it several times in the blistering cold, the entryway seemed to appear out of nowhere. I finally entered the secret passageway and was greeted by warmth and a swarm of hair and makeup professionals. Runa Ray NYFWJorge Luis and his Prive team were wrapping strands of models’ hair in twigs, then flat ironing them to create a crimped look. This was later brushed out and teased, providing exquisite volume. The nest-like look of the hair emphasized the hard structure of the clothing. Inspired by origami, the pieces had, folded details in the fabric, as well as subtle jeweling. Makeup was minimal, with iridescent white eyeliner, and nails had hard black lines to match the look of the clothing.

The space at Skylight at Clarkson Square was transformed by Art Director, Kaylee Boyer, into a whiteout wonderland. The models stood in a line, surrounded by strings of origami flowers and stars suspended from the ceiling. White twigs and branches were bunched in areas on the floor, and flickering candles added to the dreaminess. White lights illuminated some of Runa’s additional pieces of clothing that were hanging from the ceiling, framed by white wooden frames. They looked like they were floating, which added to the magic of the atmosphere.

Runa Ray DesignerRuna studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in India, then moved to Paris where she obtained a Masters in Garment Engineering. She worked with John Galliano and the House of Dior, learning to blend her expertise in Ready To Wear with the fine art of Haute Couture. Runa then founded MOJO Design Studios in India which later expanded into Singapore and London. She has showcased in Singapore a few times and this was her debut at NYFW. Runa’s designs are known for being luxuriously avant garde and intriguing. I got the chance to ask her a couple of questions backstage before the show.

Interviewer: Why did you choose to do a presentation instead of a runway show this season?

Runa Ray ModelsInterviewee: Because if you see the collection, it’s very concept based: it’s origami. It isn’t just origami, but you’re taking the concept and creating something. You have a lot of conceptual pieces which are actually seamless, like origami is. So the best way to actually showcase the art of origami and fashion would be a presentation.

Interviewer: What is the emotion behind the line? Interviewee: It’s a very clean look, and as Kaylee would say, it has a dreamy feel. The clothes are pretty structured so the mood is different from the structure so it’s going to be a good mix.

Interviewer: So it will be contrasting?

Interviewee: Exactly, like you see the hair, it’s very different.

Interviewer: I can’t wait to see it all come together, it was so nice meeting you!

Interviewee: Lovely meeting you!

“Hi, Snapchat! We’re reporting to you live from backstage at Demoo Parkchoonmoo’s runway show at New York Fashion Week,” a perky model said for a press lady’s iPhone. The Fall/Winter 2016 collection was presented at the Dock at Skylight at Clarkson Square, which had a pretzel-like maze of a runway.

Demoo Parkchoonmoo Model

Dozens of #BTS hair and makeup tweets and Instagrams were posted, and then it was time for rehearsal. “This is going to be the longest walk of my life,” the director said jokingly, as he demonstrated a sophisticated stride around the seemingly endless runway. The models laughed, and then quickly became serious as they closely observed his technique.

Demoo Parkchoonmoo Backstage

During the run-through, the models wore their street clothes (leather jackets, belted pea coats, and black denim) and some practiced in their “show” shoes. One by one, they conquered the runway, then stuck out their tongues and gave peace signs to the cameras as they returned backstage. “Now, go get dressed!” a determined PR lady announced. It was nearing show time, and the crew was behind schedule.

Demoo Parkchoonmoo Behind The Scenes

Each model had two “dressers” each, who were careful in styling the looks just right, yet vigorous in shoving on the shoes. When the girls lined up, the once diverse individuals had transformed into a magnificently cohesive group. I captured a quick photo of the model in the opening look (Zoe) with her game face on, and then rushed out to my seat. Just moments later, Zoe materialized under the bright lights, radiating strength and warmth.

Demi Park Fashion Week

This season, designer Demi Park presented a contemporary interpretation of her Korean heritage. Traditional bright colors were diluted to hues of camel, grey, gold, burgundy and eggplant. Kknotshins, or “flower shoes” were stripped of their floral prints, and Chimas, long wide skirts, were updated with dropped waistlines. The collection contained an array of both casual attire and Evening Wear that could easily translate from catwalk to street. Blouses with shoulder cutouts were layered with fur vests and paired with wide-leg trousers, and button downs peeked out from underneath cropped turtleneck sweaters with extra-long sleeves. Oversized and asymmetrical collars added to the cozy-yet-edgy aesthetic, while slim-fitting, sheer tops and floor-length silk skirts provided a touch of sensual glamour. Fur hats, handbags and muffs complimented many relaxed looks while chopsticks completed some of the chic hairstyles.

Demi Park Designer Runway Show

Demi did a flawless job of paying homage to her roots while celebrating modern style in her Fall/Winter 2016 collection. I’m sure it won’t be long before her super cool, reinvented Korean skirts and flower shoes are spotted on trendsetters and celebrities alike!

The total approximate retail value of the Prize to be awarded is U.S. $3,000. The winner of the Prize is required to comply with any and all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations related thereto and is solely responsible for any and all federal, state, and local taxes that apply to the receipt and use of any Prize. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of greater or equal value in the event the Prize or a portion of the Prize is unavailable for any reason. Prizes are non-assignable and non-transferable. No cash alternative or other substitution of the Prize is permitted, except at the sole option of Sponsor. Sponsor will not replace any lost or stolen Prize. Prizes are awarded “as is” with no warranty or guarantee, either express or implied by Sponsor. All Prize details are at Sponsor’s sole discretion. The awarding of any Prize is contingent upon full compliance with these Official Rules.

6. WINNER NOTIFICATION:
The potential winner will be notified by email within five business days of selection and, except where prohibited by law, will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and publicity/liability release, except where prohibited by applicable law, within seven (7) days of notification and provide any additional information that may be required by Sponsor. If a selected potential winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible, fails to claim a prize and/or where applicable an affidavit of eligibility and publicity/liability release is not timely received, is incomplete or modified, the Prize may be forfeited and an alternate winner selected from remaining valid, eligible entries timely submitted. In the event of a dispute regarding who submitted an entry, the entry will be deemed submitted by the authorized account holder of the email account from which the entry was sent. The winner will be responsible for all taxes arising with respect to receipt of the prize.
